Enroll at Scholar Academy

Scholar Academy is a tuition-free public charter school for grades K–8. Seats are filled by a fair, random lottery. Here's how it works, what to expect and answers to common questions.

How it works

Enrolling in four steps

Every family follows the same simple process. There is no cost to apply.

1

Apply online

Fill out the free online application during open enrollment, which begins in January. Save the confirmation number you receive — you'll use it to update or check your application.

2

The lottery

When there are more applicants than seats, students are chosen by a random, automated lottery for each grade, kindergarten through 8th. The first lottery is held in late January, and more are run as needed until every open seat is filled.

3

Watch for our email

If your child is selected, we'll email or call you. Accept or decline the seat within the time given — if we don't hear back, the seat is offered to the next student.

4

Complete registration

Your acceptance email explains how to finish the registration paperwork. Registration confirms your child will attend and lets us request records from their previous school.

Who can enroll

Scholar Academy is open to all students and does not discriminate in admissions, just like every Utah public school.

Eligibility

There are no admission tests or requirements. Kindergartners must turn 5 on or before September 1 of the school year; applications for children who are too young can't be accepted. A student expelled from any school in the past 12 months may be denied enrollment.

Enrollment preferences

By law, preference goes only to: current students re-enrolling; siblings of current students; children of founding board members; and children of school employees. Volunteer hours, favors and donations can never earn a preference.

Siblings

We make every effort to keep families together, but class-size caps may not always allow it. Once one child is accepted, brothers and sisters move to a sibling preference list and are offered seats first come, first served as space opens.

Attendance matters

Our hands-on curriculum builds problem-solving and critical-thinking skills day by day, so regular attendance is essential for students to keep pace and thrive.

Enrollment FAQ

Common questions

Still have questions? Call the front office at 435-566-OWLS (6957).

What are my child's chances of being accepted?

We can't predict it. Applications arrive throughout each enrollment period for a limited number of seats, so the odds change with every lottery.

How will I know if my child is selected?

We'll email you (and sometimes call). Please give us an email address you check often and keep your contact information current — we can't reach you with outdated information.

What if my child isn't selected?

Your application stays in the lottery pool for the next lottery if a seat opens during the year. Applications don't carry over to the next school year, so apply again during the next open enrollment.

Is there a waiting list?

No. Federal law doesn't allow a waiting list beyond the open enrollment period. Every applicant is entered in a random lottery as seats become available.

Can I do anything to improve my chances?

No. The only preferences are those set by law (see Enrollment preferences above). Volunteer hours, favors and donations are never accepted in exchange for a seat.

How do I update or withdraw my application?

Log in to the enrollment website with your confirmation number to change your phone, address or email, or to withdraw. Forgot your number? Use the “Resend Confirmation Number” link on the enrollment site.

What's the difference between enrollment and registration?

Enrollment means your child was selected in the lottery and a seat is reserved. Registration is your commitment to attend — it completes your paperwork and lets us request records from your child's previous school.

How do I secure my child's seat after the lottery?

Follow the instructions in your acceptance email and finish the registration paperwork by the deadline given. If you don't respond in time, the seat goes to the next student.
